If iMessage stays on Waiting for activation or reports an activation error, start with the connection and date-and-time settings. Avoid repeatedly toggling the service: phone-number verification may use SMS and can take up to 24 hours.
Work through these checks in order
- Connect the iPhone to working Wi-Fi or cellular data, then confirm that websites or other online services load normally.
- Check that the date, time, and time zone are correct or set automatically, and install any available iOS update.
- Confirm that your phone number can send SMS, including international SMS if required by your carrier. Check for possible charges before allowing an activation text.
- Turn iMessage and FaceTime off, restart the iPhone once, then turn both services back on and let verification run. Do not keep switching them while a verification indicator is showing.
- Check that the Apple Account and the phone number or email address you want to use appear among the send-and-receive options. If the number is still unverified after 24 hours, ask your carrier to check SMS service, then contact Apple Support.
When to get more help
If activation still fails after checking connectivity, SMS, and account details, save a screenshot of the error and contact the carrier or Apple Support as appropriate. Erasing the entire iPhone is not a necessary first troubleshooting step.
